A combination of models was developed to determine feasibility of detecting a crack in a gear tooth during operation using torsional vibration. The first is a rotordynamic model of the shaft and gear system. The second is a model of the gear teeth, including crack, using contact elements. This second model was to provide torsional forcing functions. Click here for video of cracked tooth results. |

This model was developed to troubleshoot a resonance problem of the pump casing and motor support system that occurred when cutouts were made in the motor support for drainage. The resonant frequency of the system was lowered by making the holes larger. This solved the vibration problems. |
